Examine the jack on the microphone. The difference between the two can be seen in the image below. An 1 8 trs jack which is essentially the same kind of jack you would find on a pair of headphones or a usb jack which is flat. Modern pcs have a combined mic headset jack and a headset jack.

Once you know where the two jacks are go ahead and connect your headphone extension cables to the appropriate jacks. However microphone jacks may also be on the top or front of the computer case. The phone connector was invented for use in telephone switchboards in the 19th century and is still widely used.

Many microphones utilize a mini plug connector similar to that which you would find on your mobile phone tablet or ipod.
